X-ray luminosity functions of different morphological and X-ray type AGN populations

Luminosity functions are one of the most important observational clues
when studying galaxy evolution over cosmic time. In this paper we
present the X-ray luminosity functions of X-ray detected AGN in the SXDS
and GWS fields. The limiting fluxes of our samples are 9.0×10^(-15) and
4.8×10^(-16) erg/cm^2/sec^(-1) in the 0.5 – 7.0 keV band in the two
fields, respectively. We carried out analysis in three X-ray bands and
in two redshift intervals up to z < 1.4. Moreover, we derive the
luminosity functions for different optical morphologies and X-ray types.
We confirm strong luminosity…

Life after eruption - II. The eclipsing old nova V728 Scorpii

The old nova V728 Sco has been recently recovered via photometric and
spectroscopic observations, 150 years after the nova eruption. The
spectral properties pointed to a high-inclination system with a
comparatively low mass-transfer rate. In this paper we show that the
object is an eclipsing system with an orbital period of 3.32 h. It has
enhanced long-term variability that can be interpreted as 'stunted'
dwarf-nova-type outbursts. Using the ingress and egress times of the
eclipsed components we calculate the radius of the central object. The
latter turns out to be significantly larger than…

Lyman break and UV-selected galaxies at $z \sim 1$ I. Stellar populations from ALHAMBRA survey

We take advantage of the exceptional photometric coverage provided by
the combination of GALEX data in the UV and the ALHAMBRA survey in the
optical and near-IR to analyze the physical properties of a sample of
1225 GALEX-selected Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) at $0.8 \lesssim z
\lesssim 1.2$ located in the COSMOS field. This is the largest sample of
LBGs studied at that redshift range so far. According to a spectral
energy distribution fitting with synthetic stellar population templates,
we find that LBGs at $z \sim 1$ are mostly young galaxies with a median
value of 341 Myr and have…
